S.I. No. 33/1959:

OFFICE PREMISES (WASHING FACILITIES) REGULATIONS, 1959.

OFFICE PREMISES (WASHING FACILITIES) REGULATIONS, 1959.

I, SEÁN F. LEMASS, Minister, for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (2) of section 20 of the Office Premises Act, 1958 (No. 3 of 1958), after consultation with the Minister for Health and having referred the proposals to which effect is given by the following regulations to the Advisory Council, hereby make the following regulations :

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Office Premises (Washing Facilities) Regulations, 1959.

(2) These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of September, 1959.

2. The facilities for washing to be provided and maintained in offices for the use of employed persons shall be in accordance with the standard specified in the following paragraphs.

(a) where males are employed--

(i) if the number of males employed is one hundred or less, one wash-hand basin for every twenty males,

(ii) if more than one-hundred males are employed, one wash-hand basin for every twenty males up to one hundred and one for every forty males thereafter ;

(b) where females are employed--

(i) if the number of females employed is one hundred or less, one wash-hand basin for every twenty females,

(ii) if more than one hundred females are employed, one wash-hand basin for every twenty females up to one hundred and one for every forty females thereafter ;

(c) sufficient soap and clean towels or other suitable means of cleaning and drying to be conveniently available ;

(d) where males and females are employed, the facilities to be separate ;

(e) the facilities for males to be adjacent to the sanitary conveniences provided in the office for males ;

(f) the facilities for females to be adjacent to the sanitary conveniences provided in the office for females ;

3. In the calculation of the number of wash-hand basins to be provided under these Regulations, any odd number of persons less than twenty or forty shall be reckoned, as the case may be, as twenty or forty.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The purpose of this Order is to prescribe a standard of washing facilities in offices.
