EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The regulations provide for the making of the following amendments to the signs prescribed and illustrated in the Traffic Signs Regulations, 1956 ( S.I. No. 284 of 1956 ) :

(a) The Major Road Ahead Sign (No. 201) shall henceforth have a white centre in all cases, on which the words " Yield Right of Way " or " Géill Slí " shall appear so as to make the meaning of the sign clearer to road users.

(b) The rectangular " taxi " sign (No. 10) which was formerly an informative sign will now become a regulatory sign and will be circular in shape.

(c) Sign 116 may now be used to indicate that there is a Major Road Ahead Sign (No. 201 or 201A) or a Stop Sign (No. 202) ahead. An alternative to Sign 116--No. 116A may be used to indicate that the Major Road Ahead Sign or the Stop Sign, of which it gives warning, is located at a " T " junction.

(d) In the case of Sign 125, used to indicate that there is ahead a school, a children's playground or other place frequented by large numbers of children, the symbol appearing on the sign as illustrated in the Traffic Signs Regulations, 1956, will now be reversed so as to show children moving on to the road.

(e) Certain increases in the sizes of letters used to indicate place names in English and in Irish on informative signs are now permitted, together with corresponding increases in sizes of signs and the panels used thereon.

(f) Arrows may be used on Signs Nos. 212 and 213 to indicate the direction or directions in which parking is permitted or prohibited.
