TURLOUGH HILL PUMPED STORAGE SCHEME APPROVAL ORDER, 1968. |

WHEREAS, under section 4 (1) of the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1945 (No. 12 of 1945), the Electricity Supply Board has submitted to the Minister for Transport and Power a scheme for the generation of electricity by means of hydraulic power derived from the waters of the Glendasan River, in the county of Wicklow: |

AND WHEREAS the said Minister has considered the said scheme and has consulted with the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries as to the steps to be taken by the said Board for the protection of fisheries: |

NOW, the Minister for Transport and Power, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1945 (No. 12 of 1945), and the Transport, Fuel and Power (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order, 1959 ( S.I. No. 125 of 1959 ), hereby orders as follows: |

1. This Order may be cited as the Turlough Hill Pumped Storage Scheme Approval Order, 1968. |
||
2. In this Order-- |
||
" the Act " means the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1945 (No. 12 of 1945); |
||
" the Board " means the Electricity Supply Board; |
||
" the scheduled Scheme " means the scheme set out in the Schedule hereto. |
||
3. The scheduled Scheme is hereby approved. |
||
4. The stations of the Garda Síochána at Hollywood, Roundwood and Rathdrum, in the county of Wicklow, are hereby prescribed as the places at which (in addition to the head office of the Board in the City of Dublin) the maps, plans and books of reference in relation to the scheduled Scheme shall, in pursuance of section 9 (4) of the Act, be deposited by the Board. |

5. The Wicklow People and Leinster Leader are hereby prescribed as the newspapers in which (in addition to two or more daily newspapers circulating in the city of Dublin) public notice by advertisement of the deposit of the maps, plans and books of reference in relation to the scheduled Scheme shall, in pursuance of section 9 (5) of the Act, be given by the Board. |

SCHEDULE. |
||
1. The Scheme may be cited as the Turlough Hill Pumped Storage Scheme, 1968. |
||
2. The Scheme provides for the generation of electricity by means of hydraulic power derived from the waters of the Glendasan River draining into Lough Nahanagan and, after their passage through the electricity generating plant, the storing of the waters in Lough Nahanagan and the pumping of the waters, at intervals, to a high level reservoir on Turlough Hill, being the hill with Easting Co-ordinate 306900 and Northing Co-ordinate 198700 on the National Grid and their use again for the purposes of such generation. |

3. The works to be constructed for the purpose of the Scheme are:-- |

Work No. 1: |
||
A high level reservoir on the top of Turlough Hill with intake to high pressure shaft or shafts. |
||
Work No. 2: |
||
Highpressure shaft or shafts from the upper reservoir to the power station. |
||
Work No. 3: |
||
Underground power station. |
||
Work No. 4: |
||
Tailrace tunnel or tunnels. |
||
Work No. 5: |
||
Access tunnel to the underground power station. |
||
Work No. 6: |
||
Spillway at the outlet of Lough Nahanagan. |
||
Work No. 7: |
||
Control tunnel at outlet of Lough Nahanagan. |
||
Work No. 8: |
||
Approach road from the main road near Wicklow gap to the site of the reservoir on the top of Turlough Hill. |
||
Work No. 9: |
||
Approach road from the main road near Wicklow gap to the entrance to the access tunnel to the power station and to the outlet from Lough Nahanagan. |
||
Work No. 10: |
||
Such other works and including any auxiliary buildings or other structures as may be found necessary by the Board for the complete anl satisfactory operation of the scheme. |
||
4. The approximate capacity of the generating plant to be installed in the power station is 280,000 kilowatts. |
||
5. The cost of the works at present day prices is estimated at £12,000,000 including compensation for lands, mineral and water rights, etc., but excluding the cost of transmission lines from the generating station to the points of demand. |

EXPLANATORY NOTE. |
||
The purpose of this Order is to authorise the Electricity Supply Board to provide for the generation of electricity by means of a scheme derived from the waters of the Glendasan River draining into Lough Nahangagan and, after their passage through the generating plant, the pumping of the water to a high level reservoir on Turlough Hill and their use again for generating purposes. |
