S.I. No. 164/1970:

ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1970.

ROAD TRAFFIC (SIGNS) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1970.

The Minister for Local Government in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961), and section 95 of the said Act as amended by section 6 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968), hereby makes the following Regulations--

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1970.

(2) The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1969 and these Regulations shall be construed together as one and may be cited collectively as the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to 1970.

2. Article 3 of the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 ( S.I. No. 171 of 1962 ) is hereby amended by the substitution for paragraph (2) of the following:--

" (2) ( a ) Subject to the provisions of sub-paragraph (b), place-names shall be shown in Roman letters in Irish and in English and where the spelling of a place-name is similar in both languages an Irish inscription only need be shown on the sign.

( b ) In an area determined to be a Gaeltacht area by order under section 2 of the Ministers and Secretaries (Amendment) Act, 1956 (No. 21 of 1956) the names of places in such an area shall be shown in Irish only."

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The Regulations amend the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations, 1962 to provide for the use of the Irish version only of place-names in Gaeltacht areas on informative signs within the Gaeltacht. The Regulations also provide for the use on informative signs of the Irish version only of a place-name outside the Gaeltacht where the spelling of that place-name is similar in Irish and in English.
