MERCHANT SHIPPING (PILOT SIGNALS) ORDER, 1973.

I, PETER BARRY, Minister for Transport and Power, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 45 (1) of the Pilotage Act, 1913 (as adapted by section 10 of the Adaptation of Enactments Act, 1922 (No. 2 of 1922) ), and the Transport, Fuel and Power (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order, 1959 ( S.I. No. 125 of 1959 ), hereby order as follows:

1. (1) This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Pilot Signals) Order, 1973.

(2) This Order shall come into operation on the 1st day of May, 1973.

2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order.

3. The signals to be used or displayed whenever the services of a pilot are required on any vessel shall be the single-letter signal G made by one of the methods specified in Chapter III of the International Code of Signals, 1969, as indicated in the following manner--

( a ) in conditions of fog, mist, falling snow, heavy rainstorms or in any other conditions similarly restricting visibility, whether day or night, by any method except--

(i) flag signalling,

(ii) flashing light signalling, or

(iii) signalling by hand flags or arms;

( b ) in conditions not restricting visibility, by any method by day; and

( c ) in conditions not restricting visibility, by any method by night except--

(i) flag signalling, or

(ii) signalling by hand flags or arms.

4. The Merchant Shipping (Pilot Signals) Order, 1934 (S.R. & O., No. 115 of 1934) is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order provides that pilot signals shall be in line with those prescribed in the International Code of Signals, 1969.
