ROAD TRAFFIC (SPEED LIMITS) (COUNTY OF LONGFORD) REGULATIONS, 1984. |

The Minister for the Environment in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 5 and 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and section 46 of the said Act as amended by section 25 of the Road Traffic Act, 1968 (No. 25 of 1968) hereby makes the following Regulations:-- |

Citation. | ||
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County of Longford) Regulations, 1984. |
||
Commencement. | ||
2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 17th day of September, 1984. |
||
Interpretation. | ||
3. In these Regulations save where the context otherwise requires |
||
"the Act" means the Road Traffic Act, 1961 ; |
||
"national road" means a road declared to be a national road in the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1977 ( S.I. No. 164 of 1977 ) and any reference to the number of such road shall be a reference to the number of such road as shown in column 1 of the First and Second Schedules to the aforementioned Order; |
||
"road" means a public road; |
||
"distance" means distance as measured along the centre line of a road. |
||
Built-up area speed limit. | ||
4. (1) Each of the roads described in the First Schedule to these Regulations is hereby declared not to be a public road in a built-up area for the purposes of section 45 of the Act. |
||
(2) Each of the roads described in the Second Schedule to these Regulations is hereby declared to be a public road in a built-up area for the purposes of section 45 of the Act. |
||
Special speed limit. | ||
5. Forty miles per hour shall be the speed limit for mechanically propelled vehicles on the roads specified in the third Schedule to these Regulations. |
||
Exceptions. | ||
6. There shall be excepted from the special speed limit prescribed in article 5 of these Regulations and from the built-up area speed limit the following:-- |
||
(a) ambulances, |
||
(b) fire brigade vehicles, and |
||
(c) vehicles used by members of the Garda Síochána in the performance of their duties as such members. |
||
Revocation. | ||
7. The Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County of Longford) Regulations, 1978 ( S.I. No. 122 of 1978 ) are hereby revoked. |
||
FIRST SCHEDULE |
||
Roads in the County of Longford declared not to be public roads in a built-up area for the purposes of section 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 . |
||
1. The following roads in the town of Granard:-- |
||
(a) Gaynor's Lane, Bunlahy Road, Aughnagarron Road, Robinstown Lane, Cartron Lane, Abbeylara Road. |
||
(b) The Longford Road between the town boundary and a point 83 metres west of its junction with Mills Lane. |
||
(c) The Gowna Road for a distance of 1,205 metres from the point where the town boundary intersects the north-eastern side of the road. |
||
(d) The Tromra Road between the town boundary and a point 35 metres north-west of its junction with Barrack Street. |
||
(e) The Cavan Road (National Road N55) between the town boundary and a point 145 metres north-east of its junction with the Ballyjamesduff Road. |
||
(f) The Ballyjamesduff Road between the town boundary and a point 61 metres east of its junction with the Cavan Road (National Road N55). |
||
(g) The Castlepollard Road between the town boundary and a point 36 metres south-east of its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road (National Road N55). |
||
(h) The Athlone Road (National Road N55) for a distance of 997 metres from the town boundary. |
||
(i) The Granard-Kill road between the town boundary and a point 27 metres south-west of its junction with Mills Lane. |
||
(j) The Ballinagall Road between the town boundary and a point 25 metres north-west of its junction with the Longford Road. |
||
2. The following roads in the Urban District of Longford:-- |
||
(a) Demense Laane, Abbeycartron Land, The Camp Road. |
||
(b) The Roscommon Road (National Road N63) between the urban district boundary and a point 187 metres south-west of its junction with St. Michael's Road. |
||
(c) The Major's Well Road and its continuation as the Cavan Road for a distance of 211 metres from the urban district boundary. |
||
(d) The Sligo Road (National Road N4) between the urban district boundary and a point 561 metres south of its junction with the Camp Road. |
||
SECOND SCHEDULE |
||
Roads in the County of Longford declared to be public roads in a built-up area for the purposes of section 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 . |
||
1. The following roads at Ardagh:-- |
||
(a) The Edgeworthstown-Carrickboy road between a point 250 metres east of its junction with the Longford Road and a point 210 metres west of the said junction. |
||
(b) The Longford-Lyanmore road between a point 440 metres north-west of its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road and a point 75 metres south-east of the said junction. |
||
2. The following roads at Ballinalee:-- |
||
(a) The Longford-Granard Road between a point 230 metres north-west of its junction with the Arva Road and a point 342 metres south-east of the said junction. |
||
(b) The Arva Road between its junction with the Longford-Granard road and a point 258 metres south of its junction with the Soran Road. |
||
(c) The Currycahill Road for a distance of 20 metres from its junction with the Garvagh Road. |
||
(d) The France Road for a distance of 230 metres from its junction with the Garvagh Road. |
||
(e) The Garvagh Road between its junction with the Longford-Granard road and a point 280 metres south-west of its junction with the France Road. |
||
3. The following roads at Ballymahon:-- |
||
(a) Marian Terrace, Workhouse Road, St. Matthew Park Housing Estate Roads. |
||
(b) The Lanesborough-Mullingar road between a point 23 metres south-east of its junction with the Moygh Road and a point 118 metres south-east of its junction with the Keel Road. |
||
(c) The Cavan Road (National Road N55) between its junction with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road and the southernmost point of Sand Bridge. |
||
(d) The Ballymulvey Road for a distance of 92 metres from its junction with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road. |
||
(e) The Keel Road for a distance of 220 metres from its junction with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road. |
||
(f) The Athlone Road (National Road N55) for a distance of 46 metres from its junction with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road. |
||
4. The following roads at Drumlish:-- |
||
(a) The Longford-Arva road between a point 215 metres north-east of its junction with the Newtown Forbes Road and a point 177 metres north-east of its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road. |
||
(b) Main Street and its continuation as the Mohill Road for a distance of 800 metres from the junction of Main Street with the Longford-Arva road. |
||
(c) The Edgeworthstown Road for a distance of 278 metres from its junction with the Longford-Arva road. |
||
(d) The Hill Road for a distance of 55 metres from its junction with the Longford-Arva road. |
||
5. The following roads at Edgeworthstown:-- |
||
(a) Back Lane, Church Lane, Marian Terrace, St. Patrick's Terrace, Devine Crescent. |
||
(b) The Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4) between a point 500 metres south-east of its junction with the Granard Road and a point 221 metres west of its junction with the Athlone Road (National Road N55). |
||
(c) The Athlone Road (National Road N55) for a distance of 497 metres from its junction with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(d) The Bracklon Road for a distance of 457 metres from its junction with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(e) The Granard Road for a distance of 735 metres from its junction with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(f) The Castlepollard Road for a distance of 230 metres from its junction with the Granard Road. |

(a) The Longford-Ballymahon road between a point 567 metres north-west of its junction with the Abbeyderg Road and a point 302 metres south-east of its junction with the Island Bridge Road. |

(b) The Abbeyderg Road for a distance of 153 metres from its junction with the Longford-Ballymahon road. |
||
(c) The Island Bridge Road for a distance of 142 metres from its junction with the Longford-Ballymahon road. |

7. The following roads at Lanesborough:-- |
||
(a) Power Station Road. |
||
(b) The Longford-Roscommon road (National Road N63) between a point 420 metres east of its junction with the Ballymahon Road and the boundary between the counties of Longford and Roscommon at Lanesborough Bridge. |
||
(c) Church Road for a distance of 250 metres from its junction with the Ballymahon Road. |
||
(d) The Ballymahon Road for a distance of 565 metres from its junction with the Longford-Roscommon road (National Road N63). |
||
(e) The roads serving the Bord na Móna Housing Scheme. |
||
(f) The Rathcline Road for a distance of 467 metres from its junction with the Ballymahon Road. |
||
8. The following roads at Legan:-- |
||
(a) The Edgeworthstown Road for a distance of 700 metres from its junction with the Ratharney Road. |
||
(b) The Foxhall Road for a distance of 80 metres from its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road. |
||
(c) The Ratharney Road for a distance of 250 metres from its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road. |
||
(d) The Rathowen Road for a distance of 285 metres from its junction with the Edgeworthstown Road. |
||
9. The following roads adjacent to the Urban District of Longford:-- |
||
(a) Ardnacassagh Lane, Park Road, Glack housing estate roads, Farnagh housing estate roads, Viewmount housing estate roads. |
||
(b) The Moydow Road for a distance of 340 metres from its junction with the Park Road. |
||
(c) Farnagh Lane between its junction with the Moydow Road and its junction with the Ballymakeegan Road. |
||
(d) The Dublin Road (National Road N4) between the point where the boundary of the urban district of Longford intersects the southern side of the road and a point 70 metres east of the entrance road to Viewmount housing estate. |
||
(e) Blind Man's Walk between the boundary of the urban district of Longford and its junction with the Ballinalee Road. |
||
(f) The Ballinalee Road for a distance of 420 metres from the boundary of the urban district of Longford. |
||
10. The following roads at Newtown Forbes:-- |
||
(a) The Longford-Sligo road (National Road N4) between a point 320 metres south-east of its junction with Ballykenny Road and a point 94 metres north-west of its junction with the Leitrim Road. |
||
(b) Curry Lane for a distance of 65 metres from its junction with the Longford-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(c) The Cahanagh Road for a distance of 80 metres from its junction with the Longford-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(d) The Leitrim Road for a distance of 145 metres from its junction with the Longford-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(e) The Ballykenny Road for a distance of 260 metres from its junction with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4). |
||
(f) The Lamagh Road for a distance of 110 metres from its junction with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4). |

THIRD SCHEDULE |
||
Roads in the County of Longford in respect of which a special speed limit of 40 miles per hour is prescribed. |
||
1. The following roads at Ballymahon:-- |
||
(a) Leo Casey Terrace. |
||
(b) The Lanesborough Road between a point 320 metres north-west of its junction with the Moygh Road and a point 23 metres south-east of the said junction. |
||
(c) The Moygh Road for a distance of 548 metres from its junctions with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road. |
||
(d) The Athlone Road (National Road N55) between a point 46 metres south-west of its junction with the Lanesborough-Mullingar road and a point 366 metres south-west of the said junction. |
||
2. The following roads at Edgeworthstown:-- |
||
(a) The Dublin Road (National Road N4) between a point 500 metres south-east of its junction with the Granard Road and a point 150 metres south-east of its junction with the road to the railway station. |
||
(b) The Sligo Road (National Road N4) between a point 221 metres west of its junction with the Athlone Road (National Road N55) and a point 810 metres west of the said junction. |
||
(c) The Bracklon Road between a point 457 metres from its junctions with the Dublin-Sligo road (National Road N4) and a point 1370 metres from the said junction. |
||
(d) The Whitehill Road for a distance of 135 metres from its junction with the Bracklon Road. |
||
3. The following roads in the town of Granard:-- |
||
(a) The Cavan Road (National Road N55) between a point 475 metres south-west of the town boundary and a point 145 metres north-east of its junction with the Ballyjamesduff Road. |
||
(b) The Ballyjamesduff Road between a point 61 metres east of its junction with the Cavan Road (National Road N55) and a point 291 metres east of the said junction. |
||
4. The following road at Lanesborough:-- |
||
The Rathcline Road between a point 467 metres south of its junction with the Ballymahon Road and a point 1210 metres south of the said junction. |
||
5. The following roads in and adjacent to the Urban District of Longford:-- |
||
(a) Demesne Lane, Abbeycartron Land, Camp Road, Aghadegnan Lane. |
||
(b) The Sligo Road (National Road N4) between a point 561 metres south of its junction with the Camp Road and a point 548 metres north-west of the said junction. |
||
(c) The Dublin Road (National Road N4) between a point 70 metres east of the entrance road to Viewmount housing estate and a point 1060 metres east of the said entrance road. |
||
(d) The Mayor's Well Road and its continuation as the Cavan Road between a point 27 metres north-east of its junction with Blind Man's Walk and a point 211 metres south-west of the boundary of the urban district of Longford. |
||
(e) The Ballinalee Road between a point 420 metres north-east of the boundary of the urban district of Longford and a point 1000 metres north-east of the said boundary. |
||
(f) Templemichael Glebe Lane for a distance of 250 metres from its junction with the Ballinalee Road. |
||
(g) The Drumlish Road between its junction with the Sligo Road (National Road N4) and a point 70 metres south of its junction with the Knockmartin Lane. |

6. The following roads at Termonbarry:-- |
||
(a) The Termonbarry-Longford road (National Road N5) for a distance of 285 metres from the boundary of the counties of Longford and Roscommon at Termonbarry Bridge. |
||
(b) The Fisherstown Road for a distance of 50 metres from its junction with the Termonbarry-Longford Road (National Road N5). |
||
(c) The new Termonbarry-Longford Road (by-pass to Clandra village) for a distance of 50 metres east of its junction with the Fisherstown Road. |

EXPLANATORY NOTE. |
||
These Regulations replace the Road Traffic (Speed Limits) (County of Longford) Regulations, 1978 ( S.I. No. 122 of 1978 ) and alter the speed limits applicable to certain roads in this area. |
||
The Regulations exclude the public roads mentioned in the First Schedule from the scope of the built-up area speed limit prescribed by section 45 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 and declare the public roads mentioned in the Second Schedule to be subject to that limit. |
||
The Regulations also prescribe a speed limit of 40 miles per hour in respect of the public roads mentioned in the Third Schedule. |
||
Ambulances, fire brigade vehicles and Garda Síochána vehicles while being used in the course of duty are excepted from all speed limits by the Regulations. |
