These Regulations give effect to the provisions of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea 1974, relating to the carriage of nautical publications.

They revoke the Merchant Shipping (Carriage of Nautical Publications) Regulations, 1983 ( S.I. No. 311 of 1983 ) and re-enact the provisions of that Instrument with the addition of the Illustrated table of Life Saving Signals as a scheduled publication.

The Regulations require ships registered in the State (other than those of less than 12 metres in length and fishing vessels) which go or attempt to go to sea to carry charts containing sufficient detail to show navigational marks, known dangers and other specified information which is appropriate for each part of the intended voyage. Ships intending to go to sea beyond 5 nautical miles from any coastline are also required to carry specified published directions and information.

All such charts and publications are to be carried on the ship in a place readily available to the officer of the watch.
