INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND STANDARDS (SECTION 44) (BABIES' DUMMIES) ORDER, 1988. |

I, ALBERT REYNOLDS, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961 (No. 20. of 1961), hereby make the following order: |
||
(1) This Order may be cited as the Industrial Research and Standards (Section 44) (Babies' Dummies) Order, 1988. |
||
(2) This Order shall come into operation on the 1st day of October, 1988. |
||
(3) In this Order "Babies' Dummy" means a substitute nipple for a baby to suck or bite on, not designed to facilitate a baby's obtaining fluid. |
||
(4) It shall be unlawful to manufacture, assemble or sell a Babies' Dummy unless it complies with Irish Standard 248:1981 (as amended by the Standard Specification (Babies' Dummies) Declaration, 1981, (Amendment) No. 1:1984 and the Standard Specification (Babies' Dummies) Declaration, 1981, (Amendment) No. 2:1987), being the Standard Specification declared by Eolas -- The Irish Science and Technology Agency for that commodity. |

(5) The Industrial Research and Standards (Section 44) (Babies' Dummies) Order, 1984 ( S.I. No. 284 of 1984 ), is hereby revoked. |

EXPLANATORY NOTE. |
||
The purpose of this Order is to prohibit the manufacture, assembly or sale of a babies' dummy unless it complies with Irish Standard 248:1981 (as amended by the Standard Specification (Babies' Dummies) Declaration, 1981, (Amendments Nos. 1 of 1984 and 2 of 1987) which specify safety requirements for Babies' Dummies and the testing procedures to be used for checking these requirements. |

The objective of the Order is to provide for the safety of infants by protecting them from injury or death caused by defective dummies by prescribing safety characteristics for Babies' Dummies and to provide for testing procedures. |
