I, MICHEÁL MARTIN, Minister for Foreign Affairs, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (1) of section 9 of the Passports Act 2008 , hereby make the following Regulations. |
||
Citation and commencement. |
||
1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Passports (Periods of Validity) Regulations 2008. |
||
(2) These Regulations come into operation on 1 November 2008. |
||
Definitions. |
||
2. In these Regulations- |
||
“Act” means the Passports Act 2008 , |
||
“ordinary passport” means a passport which is not a diplomatic passport, an official passport or an emergency passport. |
||
Ordinary Passport. |
||
3. (1) A period of 10 years and one day from the date of issue is prescribed as the period of validity of an ordinary passport, other than where the passport is issued to- |
||
(a) a child under 3 years of age, |
||
(b) a child not less than 3, nor more than 18, years of age, |
||
(c) a person who has lost one or more passports, |
||
(d) a person from whom one or more passports have been stolen, or |
||
(e) a person who holds a valid passport and applies for the issue of a further ordinary passport to him or her. |
||
(2) A period of 3 years and one day from the date of issue is prescribed as the period of validity of an ordinary passport issued to a person referred to in paragraph (1)(a). |
||
(3) A period of 5 years and one day from the date of issue is prescribed as the period of validity of an ordinary passport issued to a person referred to in paragraph (1)(b). |

In accordance with Section 9(1) of the Passports Act 2008 , these Regulations prescribe the periods of validity for different types of passports. |
