S.I. No. 150/2017 - Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2017.


Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 18th April, 2017.

I, SHANE ROSS, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by sections 5 and 95 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) (as adapted by the Transport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2011 ( S.I. No. 141 of 2011 )), hereby make the following regulations:

Citation, collective citation and commencement

1. (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2017.

(2) The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1997 to 2015 and these Regulations may be cited together as the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1997 to 2017.

(3) These Regulations come into operation on 13 April 2017.

Interpretation

2. In these Regulations—

“Act of 2004” means Road Traffic Act 2004 (No. 44 of 2004);

“km/h” represents kilometres per hour.

Speed limit sign — 20 km/h

3. (1) A speed limit sign, traffic sign number RUS 065 (speed limit sign — 20 km/h) shall consist of a white disc with a red border containing—

(a) in black, the figures “20”, and

(b) beneath those figures, in black letters “km/h”.

(2) The dimensions and design of the sign for traffic sign number RUS 065 are set out in the Schedule to these Regulations.

(3) A speed limit sign, in accordance with paragraph (1), may be provided by a county council, a city council or a city and county council to indicate the locations within its administrative area where a special speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour specified in bye-laws made under section 9(1) (as amended by section 22 of the Road Traffic Act 2016 (No. 21 of 2016)) of the Act of 2004 applies.

(4) In this Regulation “speed limit sign” means a traffic sign indicating the existence of special speed limit bye-laws made under section 9(1) of the Act of 2004 (as amended by section 22 of the Road Traffic Act 2016 (No. 21 of 2016), applying a special speed limit of 20 kilometres per hour.

Notes:

1. The dimensions shown are in millimetres. The standard dimension for the diameter of the sign is shown and alternative dimensions that may be used are shown in brackets.

2. The sign may be mounted on its own or, on a grey backing board as part of a larger traffic sign in combination with appropriate warning or information traffic signs.
