CIVIL LIST ACT 1837 CIVIL LIST ACT 1837 - LONG TITLE An Act for the Support of Her Majesty's Household, and of the Honour and Dignity of the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.{1} [23rd December 1837] Preamble rep. by 1901 c.4 s.9(3) sch.2 Ss.14 rep. by 1901 c.4 s.9(3) sch.2 CIVIL LIST ACT 1837 - SECT 5 #10,000 a year to be issued to defray the charges of pensions. 5. And whereas it is expedient to make provision, at the rate of [#10,000 a year] for each and every succeeding year of Her Majesty's reign, to defray the charge of such pensions as may be granted by Her Majesty chargeable on Her Majesty's civil list revenues: It shall be lawful for the Treasury to charge upon and issue quarterly out of the said consolidated fund, as an addition to the sum hereby granted for Her Majesty's civil list, such sums as shall be required to defray the charge of such pensions as may be granted as aforesaid, at the rate of [#10,000 a year] for ... every ... year of her said reign. CIVIL LIST ACT 1837 - SECT 6 6. And whereas it was resolved by the Commons House of Parliament, on the eighteenth day of February one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four, " that it is the bounden duty of the responsible advisers of the Crown to recommend to His Majesty for grants of pensions on the civil list such persons only as have just claims on the royal beneficence, or who by their personal services to the Crown, by the performance of duties to the public, or by their useful discoveries in science and attainments in literature and the arts, have merited the gracious consideration of their Sovereign and the gratitude of their country": And whereas it is expedient that provision should be made by law for carrying into full effect the said resolution, and for giving an assurance to Parliament that the responsible advisers of the Crown have acted in conformity therewith: That the pensions which may hereafter be charged upon the civil list revenues shall be granted to such persons only as have just claims on the royal beneficence, or who by their personal services to the Crown, by the performance of duties to the public, or by their useful discoveries in science and attainments in literature and the arts, have merited the gracious consideration of their Sovereign and the gratitude of their country; and that a list of all such pensions granted in each year ending the [thirth-first day of March] shall be laid before Parliament within thirty days after the said [thirty-first day of March] in each year, if Parliament shall be then sitting, but if Parliament shall not be then sitting, then within thirty days after the next meeting of Parliament. All payments out of the civil list revenue shall be paid ... clear of all fees and other deductions heretofore charged upon and deducted from such payments.
