MENTAL HEALTH ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1948 - LONG TITLE

An Act to amend the law relating to lunacy and mental treatment;
to make provision for the care of persons suffering from arrested
or incomplete development of mind; to repeal the Mental Treatment
Act (Northern Ireland), 1932, and amend the Health Services Act
(Northern Ireland), 1948; and for purposes connected with the matters
aforesaid.

MENTAL HEALTH ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1948 - SECT 73
Use of certain expressions.

73.(1) Whever in any enactment there occurs the expression "idiot,"
"imbecile," "mental defective," "mental defectiveness," "mental
deficiency" or other cognate expression, there shall be substituted
the expression "person suffering from arrested or incomplete
development of mind," "person requiring special care" "arrested or
incomplete development of mind," or such other cognate expression as
by virtue of any of the provisions of this Act the context may
require.

(2) The Governor of Northern Ireland may by Order in Council modify
the wording of any enactment so far as is necessary to bring it
into conformity with the provisions of this Act.

MENTAL HEALTH ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1948 - SECT 107
Short title and citation.

107.(1) This Act may be cited as the Mental Health Act (Northern
Ireland), 1948, and shall be construed as one with the Lunacy
(Ireland) Acts, 1821 to 1901; and those Acts and this Act may be
cited together as the Lunacy and Mental Health Acts (Northern
Ireland), 1821 to 1948.
