PUBLIC HEALTH AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1949 PUBLIC HEALTH AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1949 - LONG TITLE An Act to extend the powers of sanitary authorities with respect to the supply of water and vary the notice to be given by them respecting sewage works; to amend the law relating to the constitution and powers of certain joint boards, and to the guarantee of certain deficits incurred by statutory water undertakings; to amend the law relating to the borrowing powers of local authorities and the management of housing accommodation provided under the Labourers Acts; to amend section seventeen of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland), 1934, as to the liability for certain rates, to extend section two of the Borough Funds (Ireland) Act, 1888, to amend section three of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland), 1923, and to declare the effect of section one of the Local Officers' Superannuation Act (Ireland), 1869; to amend the law relating to the appointment of committees by local authorities and the proceedings of such committees; to apply sub-section (1) of section four of the Local Government Act (Northern Ireland), 1934, to the county borough of Londonderry; to confer on councils of rural districts certain powers as to numbering of houses and naming of streets; to enable the salaries of judges' criers to be increased; to extend the powers of certain local authorities for the provision of allotments; and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid. S.18 rep. by 1972 NI16 art.63(3) sch.19 PUBLIC HEALTH AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1949 - SECT 19 Numbering of houses, etc., by district councils. 19.(1) [A district council], may from time to time cause houses and buildings in any part of their [district] to be marked with numbers as they may think fit, and may cause to be put up or painted on a conspicuous part of a house, building or place at or near each end, corner or entrance of any street in any part of their [district] the name by which the street is known. (2) Where [a district council] have exercised in respect of any part of their [district] any such power as is referred to in the preceding sub-section, any person who destroys, pulls down or defaces any such number or name as aforesaid, or puts up any number or name different from any number or name put up by the council shall on summary conviction be liable to a penalty not exceeding [#20] for every such offence. (3) Where [a district council] have exercised in respect of any part of their [district] any such power as is referred to in sub-section (1) of this section, the occupiers of houses and other buildings in the streets in that part shall mark their houses with such numbers as the council approve, and shall renew such numbers as often as they become obliterated or defaced; and any such occupier who fails, within one week after notice for that purpose from the council, to mark his house with a number approved by the council, or to renew such number when obliterated or defaced, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding [#20], and the council may cause such numbers to be marked or to be renewed, as the case may require, and may recover as a civil debt due by any such occupier the expense of any such marking or renewal. (4) Where [a district council] exercise the powers conferred on them by sub-section (1) of this section [or] by section sixty-four of the Towns Improvement Clauses Act, 1847, as incorporated by section thirty-eight of the Towns Improvement (Ireland) Act, 1854 (as those Acts have effect in Northern Ireland) with respect to the putting up or painting of the name by which a street is to be known, they shall not cause such name to be put up or painted otherwise than in English.
