SOCIAL NEED (GRANTS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1970 SOCIAL NEED (GRANTS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1970 - LONG TITLE An Act to authorise the payment of certain grants towards expenditure incurred by reason of special social need in urban areas. [9th June 1970] Grants for special social need in certain areas. SOCIAL NEED (GRANTS) ACT (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1970 - SECT 1 1.(1) The [Department of Education] may out of money provided by Parliament pay grants, of such amounts as it may with the consent of the Ministry of Finance determine, to local authorities, statutory authorities or other persons whomsoever in respect of expenditure incurred by them by reason of the existence in any urban area of special social need. (2) Grants under this section may be paid at such times, subject to such conditions and on account of such expenditure as the [Department of Education] may determine. (3) In this section "local authority" has the same meaning as in section 1 of the Local Government and Roads Act (Northern Ireland) 1968 and "statutory authority" means a body (by whatsoever name called) established under an enactment of the Parliament of Northern Ireland or of the United Kingdom.
