DISABLED PERSONS
The Disability Discrimination (2006 Order) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 2006
The Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister, in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 1(2) of the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006[1] and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
Citation and interpretation
1.
—(1) This Order may be cited as the Disability Discrimination (2006 Order) (Commencement No.1) Order (Northern Ireland) 2006.
(2) In this Order—
"the Order" means the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006; and
"the 1995 Act" means the Disability Discrimination Act 1995[2].
Appointed Day
2.
—(1) The day appointed for the coming into operation of the following provisions of the Order is 3rd July 2006—
(a) Article 16(2) (codes of practice);
(b) paragraphs 1, 3(1) to (4), 12(1) to (3), 13, 14, 15, 16(1) and (4), 22(1) to (3) and (5), and 30(1) and (2) of Schedule 1 (minor and consequential amendments), and Article 19(1) so far as relating to those paragraphs;
(2) The day appointed for the coming into operation of the following provisions of the Order for the purpose only of exercising any power to make regulations, orders or rules of court is 3rd July 2006—
(a) Article 4 (discrimination by public authorities) so far as it inserts sections 21D and 21E into the 1995 Act;
(b) Article 13 (private clubs, etc.) so far as it inserts sections 21G and 21H into the 1995 Act;
(c) Article 14 (discrimination in relation to letting of premises) so far as it inserts sections 24K and 24L into the 1995 Act;
(d) Article 17 (generalisation of section 56 of the 1995 Act);
(e) Article 18 (meaning of "disability");
(f) paragraphs 20 and 25(2) and (3) of Schedule 1, and Article 19(1) so far as relating to those paragraphs.

EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Order)
This is the first Commencement Order to be made under the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 ("the Order"). The Order extensively amends the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 ("the 1995 Act").
The provisions referred to in Article 2 of this Order are brought into operation on 3rd July 2006.
Article 2(1) brings into operation Article 16(2) and paragraph 22(1) to (3) and (5) of Schedule 1, concerning codes of practice.
Article 2(1) also brings into operation various minor amendments and repeals to the 1995 Act.
Article 2(2) brings into operation, for the purpose only of exercising any power to make regulations, orders or rules of court, a number of provisions amending the 1995 Act.
