Summary
The application relates to improving a policy for a stochastic control problem, for example in Markov decision processes. Markov decision processes are widely used to model sequential decision making under uncertainty, and are involved in many stochastic control problems such as financial portfolio optimisation, industrial equipment replacement, generating sports strategies etc. The Hearing Officer applied the four-step approach set out inAerotel/Macrossanand used the five signposts set out inAT&T/CVON. He found the inventions to be excluded and therefore refused the application.
