MERCHANT SHIPPING

CONFIRMATION OF LEGISLATION

The Merchant Shipping (Confirmation of Legislation) (Cyprus) Order, 1953

Present,

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Whereas it is provided by Section 735 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894 (hereinafter called "the said Section") that the Legislature of any British possession may by Act or Ordinance confirmed by Her Majesty in Council repeal, wholly or in part, any provisions of that Act (other than those of the Third Part thereof, which relate to emigrant ships) relating to ships registered in that possession; but that any such Act or Ordinance shall not take effect until the approval of Her Majesty has been proclaimed in that possession or until such time thereafter as may be fixed by the Act or Ordinance for the purpose:

And Whereas the Legislature of the Colony of Cyprus by a Law No. 1 of 1952 entitled "A Law to consolidate and amend the Shipping (Regulations as to Safety) Laws and to make provision for the Certification and Welfare of Seamen", as amended by Law No. 17 of 1953 entitled "A Law to amend the Merchant Shipping (Safety Regulation and Seamen) Law, 1952" (hereinafter called "the said Law") has in part repealed the provisions of the said Act that apply to British registered ships in Cyprus other than those of the Third Part thereof, which relate to emigrant ships:

And Whereas it is expedient that the said Law should be confirmed by Her Majesty.

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers vested in Her by the said Section and all other powers enabling Her in that behalf, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered as follows:-

1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Confirmation of Legislation) (Cyprus) Order, 1953, and shall come into operation on the twenty-third day of June, 1953.

2. The said Law is hereby confirmed.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

By this Order the Queen in Council confirms Cyprus Law No. 1 of 1952 entitled "A Law to consolidate and amend the Shipping (Regulations as to Safety) Laws and to make provision for the Certification and Welfare of Seamen", as amended by Law No. 17 of 1953 entitled "A Law to amend the Merchant Shipping (Safety Regulation and Seamen) Law, 1952".
