Whereas section 34(2) of the Prevention of Oil Pollution Act 1971 provides that the Secretary of State may by order appoint a day on which the Act shall come into force but that the day so appointed shall not be earlier than the day, or if more than one, the latest day appointed under section 12(3) of the Oil in Navigable Waters Act 1971 for the coming into force of the provisions of that Act;
And whereas the latest day appointed for the coming into force of the provisions of the Oil in Navigable Waters Act 1971 was 5th January 1973(1);
Now the Secretary of State in exercise of the power conferred on him by section 34(2) of the Prevention of Oil Pollution Act 1971 hereby orders as follows:-
1. This Order may be cited as the Prevention of Oil Pollution Act 1971 (Commencement) Order 1973.
2. The Prevention of Oil Pollution Act 1971 shall come into force on 1st March 1973.

This Order brings into operation the Prevention of Oil Pollution Act 1971, which consolidates the Oil in Navigable Waters Acts 1955 to 1971 and section 5 of the Continental Shelf Act 1964.
