The Secretary of State concerned with health in England, the Secretaries of State respectively concerned with health and with agriculture in Wales and in Scotland, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Department of Health and Social Services for Northern Ireland and the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland, acting jointly in exercise of powers conferred by sections 4 and 129(4) of the Medicines Act 1968 and now vested in them(1) and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, having regard to the recommendations made by the Medicines Commission and after consulting such organisations as they consider appropriate including those which appear to them to be representative of interests likely to be substantially affected by this order pursuant to section 129(6) of that Act, hereby make the following order:-
1. This order may be cited as the Medicines (British Pharmacopoeia Commission) Amendment Order 1982 and shall come into operation on 19th October 1982.
2.-(1) Article 3 of the Medicines (British Pharmacopoeia Commission) Order 1970 (establishment of British Pharmacopoeia Commission) shall be amended in accordance with the following paragraphs of this Article.
(2) In paragraph (b) the word "and" at the end of that paragraph shall be omitted; and in paragraph (c) for "section 102(2)" there shall be substituted "section 102(3)".
(3) After paragraph (c) there shall be inserted the following paragraphs:-
"(d)the preparation under section 99(3)(b) of the Act of any compendium or any new edition thereof; and
(e)the preparation under section 99(3)(b) of the Act, as given effect by section 102(1) thereof, of any amendments to any compendium referred to in paragraph (d) of this Article.".

This Order amends the Medicines (British Pharmacopoeia Commission) Order 1970 so as to enable the British Pharmacopoeia Commission to prepare a compendium under section 99(3)(b) of the Medicines Act 1968 and to prepare future editions thereof and any amendments thereto. Such compendium is one containing information relating to substances and articles which are or may be used in the practice of veterinary medicine or veterinary surgery, or substances and articles which are used in the manufacture of those veterinary items. This Order also corrects an erroneous reference in Article 3(c) of the 1970 Order.
In the case of the Secretaries of State concerned with health in England and Wales by virtue of Article 2(2) of, and Schedule 1 to, the Transfer of Functions (Wales) Order 1969 (S.I. 1969/388); in the case of the Secretary of State concerned with agriculture in Wales by virtue of Article 2(3) of, and Schedule 1 to, the Transfer of Functions (Wales) (No. 1) Order 1978 (S.I. 1978/272); and in the case of the Northern Ireland Departments by virtue of section 40 of, and Schedule 5 to, the Northern Ireland Constitution Act 1973 (c. 36) and section 1(3) of, and paragraph 2(1)(b) of Schedule 1 to, the Northern Ireland Act 1974 (c. 28).
