Whereas a draft of this Order has in accordance with section 6(1) of the Statutory Instruments Act 1946 been laid before each House of Parliament for forty days and neither House has resolved that the draft be not submitted to Her Majesty:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in pursuance of section 1(2) of the Imperial War Museum Act 1955, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:-

1. This Order may be cited as the Imperial War Museum (Board of Trustees) Order 1986 and shall come into operation forthwith.

2. For paragraph (1) of the Schedule to the Imperial War Museum Act 1920(1) (which relates to the membership of the Board of Trustees of the Imperial War Museum) there shall be substituted the paragraph set out in the Schedule to this Order.

"(1) The Board shall consist of a President and nineteen other members who shall be appointed as shown in the following Table:-

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order varies paragraph (1) of the Schedule to the Imperial War Museum Act 1920 in five ways. First, it reduces the membership of the Board of Trustees of the Imperial War Museum ("the Board") to 20. Second, the Director of the British Museum is no longer to be a member ex officio of the Board. Third, the Secretary of State for Defence is to be the appointing authority for one member of the Board; previously he appointed three members. Fourth, the reference to the Government of Ceylon is now to the Government of Sri Lanka and, fifth, the reference to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland is omitted in view of the dissolution of the Federation.

The Schedule was amended by the Schedule to the Imperial War Museum Act 1955, Schedule 4 to the South Africa Act 1962 (c. 23), S.I. 1964/488 and section 4(3) of the Pakistan Act 1973 (c. 48). By S.I. 1967/486 and 1968/1657 the functions of the Secretary of State for the Colonies were transferred to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. By S.I. 1966/950 the style and title of the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations was changed to the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs and by S.I. 1968/1657 his functions were transferred to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. By S.I. 1964/490, 1983/879, 1984/1814 and 1986/600 the relevant functions of the Minister of Education were transferred to the Lord President of the Council, By S.I. 1962/1549 the style and title of the Minister of Works was changed to Minister of Public Buildings and Works and by S.I. 1970/1681 his relevant functions were transferred to the Secretary of State. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved by article 1 of S.I. 1963/2085.
