NURSES, MIDWIVES AND HEALTH VISITORS

In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 22(4) of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979(1), I hereby approve the Rules made by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting and set out in the Schedule hereto.

This Order may be cited as the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Entry to Training Requirements) Amendment Rules Approval Order 1987 and shall come into force on 31st March 1987.

SCHEDULEThe United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting

The Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979

The United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sections 2(3) and 22 (1)-(3) of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979(2), and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf having, in accordance with section 22(3) of the Act consulted the National Boards and representatives of groups likely to he affected by these Rules, hereby makes the following Rules, namely:-

Citation and interpretation

1.-(1) These Rules may he cited as the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Entry to Training Requirements) Amendment Rules 1987.

(2) In these Rules "the principal Rules" means the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Rules l983(3).

Amendment of principal Rules

2. - For rule 16 of the principal Rules there shall he substituted the following:-

"Entry to training requirements

16. -

(1) Subject to paragraph (3) of this rule the minimum educational requirements for entry to training leading to qualification for admission to Part 1, 3, 5, or 8 of the register shall be either:-

(a)a minimum of five subjects at ordinary level A, B or C grade in the General Certificate of Education of England and Wales or Grade 1 in the Certificate of Secondary Education; or

(b)a minimum of five subjects at O Grades (Bands A, B or C) in the Scottish Certificate of Education; or

(c)the Northern Ireland Grammar School Senior Certificate of Education of five passes in the examination for that Certificate, or five subjects at A, B or C grade in the Northern Ireland General Certificate of Education at ordinary level; or

(d)such other qualifications as the Council may consider the equivalent to those set out in paragraph 1(a), (b) or (c) of this rule; or

(e)a specified pass standard in an educational test approved by the Council.

(2) The minimum educational requirements for entry to training leading to qualification enabling an application to he made for admission to Part 2,4,6 or 7 of the register shall he that the entrant must provide evidence of having attained a good standard of general education extending over a period of at least ten years.

(3) Where a person has complied with the requirements for enabling an application to he made for admission to Part 2,4,6 or 7 of the register as set out in paragraph (2) of rule 14 that person shall he entitled to enter into training leading to admission to Part 1, 3, 5 or 8 of the register without complying with the requirements of paragraph (1) of this rule provided that:-

(a)her registration in Part 2,4,6 or 7 of the register was not achieved pursuant to rule 19(3);

(b)she may only apply for entry to a training course the successful completion of which would enable her to apply for admission to Part 1, 3 and/or 5 of the register in the same category as she was registered in Part 2, 4 and/or 6 of the register; or

(c)if she is registered in Part 7 of the aster she may only apply for entry to a training course, the successful completion of which would enable her to apply for registration in Part 1, 5 or 8 of the register if it is in the specialisation in which the person has practised for a minimum period of one year (or practised part-time for an equivalent period) immediately prior to entering the training course; and

(d)she has practised for a minimum period of one year full time (or practised part-time for an equivalent period) as a nurse subsequent to registration in Part 2, 4, 6 or 7 of the register; and

(e)she has produced to the Council statements from the Director of Nurse Education of her former training establishment and at least one senior nurse manager which satisfy the Council that she has the ability to undertake successfully the proposed training courses."
