The (A696) Newcastle-Edinburgh Trunk Road (Prestwick Terrace to Kenton Bank Foot De-Trunking) Order 1988

The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Order in exercise of powers conferred by sections 10 and 12 of the Highways Act 1980(1), and now vested in him(2), and of all other enabling powers:

1. The length of trunk road described in the Schedule to this Order and shown by broad striped hatching on the deposited plan shall cease to be a trunk road and shall be classified as a principal road as from the date on which the Secretary of State notifies the County Council of Northumberland and the City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne that the new trunk roads are open for through traffic.

2. In this Order-

"principal road"as a classification for a new highway, means that the highway is a principal road for the purposes of enactments and instruments which refer to highways classified as principal roads and is also classified for the purpose of every other enactment and instrument which refers to highways classified by the Secretary of State;
"the deposited plan"means the plan folio numbered HA10/2-/N211 marked "The (A696) Newcastle-Edinburgh Trunk Road (Prestwick Terrace to Kenton Bank Foot De-Trunking) Order 1988", containing one map numbered 1, signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at the Department of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3PY;
"the new trunk roads"means the main new trunk road and the slip roads to be constructed by the Secretary of State in pursuance of the (A696) Newcastle-Edinburgh Trunk Road (Woolsington Bypass and Slip Roads) Order 1988(3); and
"the Trunk Road"means the (A696) Newcastle-Edinbugh Trunk Road.

3. This Order shall come into force on 16th June 1988 and may be cited as the (A696) Newcastle-Edinburgh Trunk Road (Prestwick Terrace to Kenton Bank Foot De-Trunking) Order 1988.

THE SCHEDULELENGTH OF TRUNK ROAD CEASING TO BE TRUNK ROAD

That length of the Trunk Road in the Borough of Castle Morpeth and the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the Counties of Northumberland and Tyne and Wear from a point 549 metres south east of its junction with Prestwick Road (marked "A" on the map numbered 1 in the deposited plan) to a point at Kenton Bank Foot Railway Bridge (marked "B" on the map numbered 1 in the deposited plan), a distance of about 3.50 kilometres.
