The Secretary of State, being a Minister designated(1)for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972(2)in relation to units of measurement to be used for economic, health, safety or administrative purposes, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(2) and (4) of the said Act of 1972, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Mining Industry Act 1926 (Metrication) Regulations 1991 and shall come into force on 30th November 1991.
2. On and after 1st January 1995, in section 23(1) of the Mining Industry Act 1926(3), for the words "one hundred feet" there shall be substituted "30.480 metres".

These Regulations implement, for the purposes of the Mining Act 1926, Council Directive No. 80/181/EEC (O.J. 1980, L39, 15.2.80, p.40) as amended by Council Directive No. 89/617/EEC (O.J. 1989, No. L357, 7.12.89, p.28), which establishes the legal units of measurement to be used throughout the Community. These Regulations change, with effect on and after 1st January 1995, the reference in section 23(1) of the Mining Act 1926 from feet to the equivalent distance expressed in metres (regulation 2).
