(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order replaces the Merchant Shipping (Categories of Registries of Overseas Territories) Order 1988 which was made under section 11 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1988. The section enables Orders in Council to establish categorisation of registry by reference to which registration of ships in the relexant overseas territories-i.e. Crown Dependencies and dependent territories-may be regulated. That Order assigned the Isle of Man and Bermuda to category 1A, namely territories which may register ships of any tonnage or type (subject to any restrictions under local law).
This Order repeats that category, and introduces a new one, 2A: Limited tonnage, to which Guernsey and Jersey are assigned. Under this category ships of more than 150 gross tons may not be registered in Guernsey or Jersey.
