TELECOMMUNICATIONS

The Telecommunications (Single Emergency Call Number) Regulations 1992

The Secretary of State, being a Minister designated(1) for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972(2) in respect of measures relating to the establishment of a single European emergency call number, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by that section and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Telecommunications (Single Emergency Call Number) Regulations 1992 and shall come into force on 31st December 1992.

2. The licence granted under section 7 of the Telecommunications Act 1984(3) to any public telecommunications operator within the meaning of section 9 of that Act shall from the date of coming into force of these Regulations have inserted, at the end of the condition requiring the provision of public emergency call services, an additional paragraph in the following terms:-�

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations implement Council Directive 91/396/EEC (O.J. No. L217, 6.8.91, p.31) and require any public telecommunications operator within the meaning of section 9 of the Telecommunications Act 1984 to provide an emergency call service on the number 112 in addition to the existing 999 service as a condition of their licence.
