The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 58(5) of the Fair Trading Act 1973(1), hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Fair Trading Act (Amendment) (Newspaper mergers) Order 1995 and shall come into force on 13th June 1995.
2. In section 58(4) of the Fair Trading Act 1973, for "25,000" there shall be substituted "50,000".

This Order increases the threshold below which the Secretary of State has a discretion to give his consent to a newspaper merger requiring his consent without referring the matter to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission for investigation and report.
