The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 171(1) and 182(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995(1), hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 (Appointed Day No. 1) Order 1996.
2. The day appointed for the purposes of sections 171(1) and 182(1) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 is 30th May 1996.

(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order appoints 30th May 1996 as the day on which Chapter III and Chapter IV of Part VI of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 come into force, and Schedule 4 to the Act ceases to have effect.
This date is the day on which the 1992 Protocols to the International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage 1969, and to the International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage 1971, come into force.
