Whereas a draft of this Order has been approved by resolution of each House of Parliament:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in pursuance of section 1(4) of the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975(1), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:-

Citation, commencement and revocation

1.-(1) This Order may be cited as the Ministerial and other Salaries Order 1996.

(2) This Order shall come into force on 24th July 1996.

(3) The Ministerial and other Salaries Order 1995(2) is hereby revoked.

Increase of Ministerial salaries

2. For the annual amount, or the maximum or minimum annual amount, of salary specified in Parts I, II, III and IV of Schedule 1 to the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975 ("the 1975 Act") in relation to each of the offices specified in the first column of Schedule 1 to this Order there shall be substituted the amount, or the maximum or minimum amount, specified in relation to that office-

(a)in the second column of that Schedule, for the interim period, and

(b)in the third column of that Schedule, thereafter.

Increase of salaries of Opposition Leaders and Whips

3. For the annual amount of salary specified in Part I of Schedule 2 to the 1975 Act in relation to each of the positions specified in the first column of Schedule 2 to this Order there shall be substituted the amount specified in relation to that position-

(a)in the second column of that Schedule, for the interim period, and

(b)in the third column of that Schedule, thereafter.

Increase of Lord Chancellor's salary

4. For the amount specified in section 1(2) of the 1975 Act as the annual amount by which the salary of the Lord Chancellor is to exceed that of the Lord Chief Justice there shall be substituted £2,500.

Increase of the Speaker's salary

5. For the annual amount specified in section 1(3) of the 1975 Act as the salary of the Speaker of the House of Commons there shall be substituted-

(a)for the interim period, £46,156, and

(b)thereafter, £60,000.

Interpretation: the interim period

6. In this Order, "the interim period" means the period starting with 24th July 1996 and ending with the day of the poll in the first parliamentary general election after that date.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order increases salaries payable under the Ministerial and other Salaries Act 1975 to Ministers, to certain salaried Members of the Opposition, to the Speaker of the House of Commons and to certain other paid office holders. The amounts specified in this Order (other than Part II of Schedule 1) are the maximum salaries payable. The actual salaries in payment may therefore be below these levels.
