ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Secretary of State for the Environment and the Secretary of State for Wales, acting jointly in exercise of powers conferred on them by section 56(1) and (3) of the Environment Act 1995(1), hereby make the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Environment Agency (Transfer Date) Order 1996.
2. For the purposes of Part I of the Environment Act 1995 as it applies for or in connection with transfers under or by virtue of Chapter I of that Part, the transfer date shall be 1st April 1996.

Chapter I of Part I of the Environment Act 1995 provides for the establishment of the Environment Agency for England and Wales. That Chapter further provides for the transfer to the Agency on the transfer date of the functions, property, rights and liabilities of the National Rivers Authority, Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution and the waste regulation authorities, and certain functions, property, rights and liabilities of the Secretary of State. This Order sets 1st April 1996 as the transfer date.
