The Secretary of State in exercise of the power conferred on him by section 4A(1) and (7) of the Coroners Act 1988(1) and section 25 of the Welsh Language Act 1993(2), and after consulting the councils and coroners appearing to him to be affected by this Order, and such other persons as he thinks appropriate, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Coroners' Districts (Wales) Order 1996 and shall come into force on 1st April 1996.
2.-(1) Coroners' districts in the Counties of Clwyd, Gwent, Gwynedd, Mid Glamorgan, Powys, South Glamorgan and West Glamorgan, as those counties existed immediately before 1st April 1996, shall be amalgamated and altered so that the areas of those districts are divided into the coroners' districts, for which the alternative names in English and Welsh are given where applicable, set out in column (1) of Schedule 1 to this Order and each such district shall comprise the area specified in respect thereof in column (2) of that Schedule.
(2) The areas described in column (2) of that Schedule are local government areas in Wales as they exist on 1st April 1996 by virtue of the amendments made by section 1 of, and Schedule 1 to, the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994(3).
3.-(1) On 1st April 1996, any process issued, order made, direction given, inquest begun or other thing done by or to the coroner for an existing coroner's district shall be deemed to have been issued, made, given, begun or done by or to the coroner for the relevant new coroner's district.
(2) All documents, exhibits, registers and other things in the custody of the coroner for an existing coroner's district in connection with inquests or post-mortem investigations shall be transferred to the coroner for the relevant new coroner's district.
(3) In this article, the relevant new coroner's district in relation to an existing coroner's district is the new district, for which the alternative names in English and Welsh are given where applicable, specified in column (2) of Schedule 2 to this Order opposite the name of the existing district (or districts) in column (1) of that Schedule.
(4) In this article "coroner" includes any deputy coroner or assistant deputy coroner.
(5) This article is without prejudice to paragraph 23 of Schedule 17 to the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 (transitional provisions: coroners).

(This note is not part of the Order)
Article 2 of the Order amalgamates and alters all of the existing coroners' districts in Wales (except those in the existing County of Dyfed) so that the area of those districts are divided into the coroners' districts set out in Schedule 1 to this Order. That Schedule describes the new coroners' districts by reference to the new counties and county boroughs in Wales. Article 3 of, and Schedule 2 to, this Order provide for transitional arrangements.
1988 c. 13; section 4A was inserted by paragraph 82(5) of Schedule 16 to the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994 (c. 19) and the powers in subsections (1) and (7) of that section have been brought into force by S.I. 1995/852, Schedule 5.
