The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 205(5) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Light Dues) (Amendment) Regulations 1998 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998.
2. In Part IV of Schedule 2 to the Merchant Shipping (Light Dues) Regulations 1997(2), in paragraph (10), for the words "involved in land defences and/or" there shall be substituted the words "engaged solely in harbour maintenance, dredging, building or maintenance of sea defences or".

This Order amends the Merchant Shipping (Light Dues) Regulations 1997. Apart from minor drafting changes, the amendment provides that vessels engaged solely in harbour maintenance or dredging are exempt from light dues whether or not they are involved in sea defences or land reclamation.
