ROAD TRAFFIC

The M275 and M27 Motorway (Speed Limit) Regulations 2005

  Made 20th July 2005 
  Laid before Parliament 21st July 2005 
  Coming into force 12th August 2005 

The Secretary of State for Transport in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 17(2) and (3) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984[1], after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with section 134(2) of that Act, hereby makes the following Regulations:

Citation and commencement
     1. These Regulations may be cited as the M275 and M27 Motorway (Speed Limit) Regulations 2005 and shall come into force on 12th August 2005.

Imposition of Speed Limit
    
2. A person shall not drive a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding 60 miles per hour on the lengths of road specified in Schedule 1.

    
3. A person shall not drive a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding 50 miles per hour on the lengths of road specified in Schedule 2.

SCHEDULE 1

(60 MILES PER HOUR SPEED LIMIT)


LENGTHS OF MOTORWAY FORMING PARTS OF M275 AND M27 AT PORTSMOUTH

     1. The whole of the M275 northbound carriageway, from its junction with the northbound entry slip from Rudmore Roundabout to its junction with the M275 northbound exit and M27 (Junction 12) westbound and eastbound entry slip roads, a distance of 2,240 metres.

     2. The whole of the M275 southbound carriageway, from its junction with the M27 (Junction 12) eastbound and westbound exit and M275 southbound entry slip roads, to its junction with the southbound exit slip to Rudmore Roundabout, a distance of 2,258 metres.

     3. The M275 northbound exit and M27 (Junction 12) eastbound entry slip road from its junction with the M275 northbound to its junction with the M27 eastbound, a distance of 540 metres.

     4. The M27 (Junction 12) westbound exit and M275 southbound entry slip road from its junction with the M27 westbound to its junction with the M275 southbound, a distance of 590 metres.

     5. The M27 (Junction 12) eastbound exit and M275 southbound entry slip road from its junction with the M27 eastbound to its junction with the M275 southbound, a distance of 1,007 metres.

     6. The M275 northbound exit and M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip road from its junction with the M275 northbound to its junction with the M27 westbound, a distance of 530 metres.



SCHEDULE 2

(50 MILES PER HOUR SPEED LIMIT)


LENGTHS OF MOTORWAY FORMING PARTS OF M275 AND M27 AT PORTSMOUTH

     1. The M275 northbound carriageway from its junction with the A3 Mile End Road to its junction with the northbound entry slip from Rudmore Roundabout, a distance of 686 metres.

     2. The M275 southbound carriageway from its junction with the southbound exit slip to Rudmore Roundabout to its junction with the A3 Mile End Road, a distance of 662 metres.

     3. The M275 northbound entry slip road between its junction with Rudmore Roundabout and a point 280 metres north of that junction, including the exit spur road connecting the M275 to Whale Island Way.

     4. The M275 southbound exit slip road from its junction with the M275 southbound carriageway towards Mile End Road, a distance of 284 metres.

     5. The M275 northbound exit slip road from its junction with the M27 westbound to its junction with the connecting road from the A27 (Paulsgrove) junction, a distance of 450 metres.

     6. The M27 (Junction 12) eastbound exit slip road from its junction with the M27 eastbound to its junction with the connecting road linking the A27 (Paulsgrove) junction with the M275 northbound exit slip road and the M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip road, a distance of 320 metres.

     7. The southbound and northbound carriageways of the connecting road between the A27 (Paulsgrove) junction and its junction with the M275 northbound exit slip road and the M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip road, a distance of 810 metres.

     8. The M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip road from its junction with the connecting road linking the A27 (Paulsgrove) junction with the M275 northbound exit and the M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip road to its junction with the M27 westbound, a distance of 245 metres.

     9. The M275 southbound entry slip road from its junction with the connecting road linking the A27 (Paulsgrove) junction with the M275 northbound exit and the M27 (Junction 12) westbound entry slip roads to its junction with the M27 (Junction 12) eastbound and M275 southbound slip road, a distance of 240 metres.



EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)


These Regulations impose speed limits of 50 m.p.h. and 60 m.p.h. on specified lengths of the M275 Motorway and specified slip roads of it and the M27 Motorway at Portsmouth. It replaces the existing 70 m.p.h. speed limit imposed by the Motorways Traffic (Speed Limit) Regulations 1974 (S.I. 1974/502). A full regulatory impact assessment has not been produced for this instrument and it has no impact on the costs of business.
