The District of Newark and Sherwood (Electoral Changes) Order 2007

  Made 25th January 2007 
  Coming into force in accordance with article 1(2)

The Boundary Committee for England[1], under section 15(4)[2] of the Local Government Act 1992[3] ("the 1992 Act"), have conducted a review of the district of Newark and Sherwood and have submitted to the Electoral Commission[4] recommendations dated July 2006.

     A period of not less than six weeks has expired since the receipt of those recommendations.

     The Electoral Commission have decided to give effect, without modification, to those recommendations.

     Accordingly, the Electoral Commission, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 17[5] and 26[6] of the 1992 Act, make the following Order:

Citation and commencement
     1. —(1) This Order may be cited as the District of Newark and Sherwood (Electoral Changes) Order 2007.

    (2) This Order comes into force—

Interpretation
    
2. In this Order—

Wards of the district of Newark and Sherwood
     3. —(1) The existing wards of the district[9] shall be abolished.

    (2) The district shall be divided into twenty-five wards which shall be named as set out in column (1) of the Schedule.

    (3) Each ward shall comprise the area described in column (2) of the Schedule by reference to parishes and parish wards or, where an area is not so described, the area designated on the map by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by red lines.

    (4) The number of councillors to be elected for each ward shall be the number specified in respect of the ward in column (3) of the Schedule.

    (5) Where a boundary is shown on the map as running along a road, railway line, footway, watercourse or similar geographical feature, it shall be treated as running along the centre line of the feature.

Wards of the parish of Balderton
     4. —(1) The existing wards of the parish of Balderton shall be abolished.

    (2) The parish shall be divided into three wards which shall be named Balderton North, Balderton South and Balderton West.

    (3) Each ward shall comprise the area designated on sheet 4 by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by orange lines.

    (4) The number of councillors to be elected for Balderton West ward shall be eight, for Balderton North ward shall be seven and for Balderton South ward shall be three.

Wards of the parish of Coddington
    
5. —(1) The parish of Coddington shall be divided into two wards which shall be named Coddington East and Coddington West.

    (2) Each ward shall comprise the area designated on sheet 4 by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by orange lines.

    (3) The number of councillors to be elected for Coddington East ward shall be nine and for Coddington West ward shall be one.

Wards of the parish of Newark
    
6. —(1) The existing wards of the parish of Newark shall be abolished.

    (2) The parish shall be divided into five wards which shall be named Beacon, Bridge, Castle, Devon and Magnus.

    (3) Each ward shall comprise the area designated on sheet 4 by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by orange lines.

    (4) The number of councillors to be elected for Beacon ward shall be six and for each of Bridge, Castle, Devon and Magnus wards shall be three.

Wards of the parish of Southwell
    
7. —(1) The existing wards of the parish of Southwell shall be abolished.

    (2) The parish shall be divided into three wards which shall be named Southwell East, Southwell North and Southwell West.

    (3) Each ward shall comprise the area designated on sheet 3 by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by orange lines.

    (4) The number of councillors to be elected for each ward shall be five.

Map
    
8. Newark and Sherwood District Council shall make a print of the map available for inspection at its offices by any member of the public at any reasonable time.

Electoral register
    
9. The registration officer for the district shall make such rearrangement of, or adaptation of, the register of local government electors as may be necessary for the purposes of, and in consequence of, this Order.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order makes changes to the electoral arrangements for the district of Newark and Sherwood following recommendations made by the Boundary Committee for England to the Electoral Commission.

The Electoral Commission accepted the Boundary Committee's recommendations without modification.

The electoral changes apply in respect of local government elections to be held on and after the ordinary day of election of councillors in 2007.

Article 3 abolishes the existing wards of the district and replaces them with 25 new ones. That article, the Schedule and the map also establish the names and areas of the new district wards and the numbers of district councillors for each ward.

Article 4 abolishes the existing parish wards of the parish of Balderton and replaces them with 3 new ones. That article and the map also establish the names and areas of the new parish wards and the numbers of parish councillors for each ward.

Article 5 establishes 2 parish wards for the parish of Coddington. That article and the map also establish the areas of the new parish wards and the numbers of parish councillors for each ward.

Article 6 abolishes the existing parish wards of the parish of Newark and replaces them with 5 new ones. That article and the map also establish the names and areas of the new parish wards and the numbers of parish councillors for each ward.

Article 7 abolishes the existing parish wards of the parish of Southwell and replaces them with 3 new ones. That article and the map also establish the names and areas of the new parish wards and the numbers of parish councillors for each ward.

Article 9 obliges the Electoral Registration Officer to make any necessary amendments to the electoral register to reflect the new electoral arrangements.

The map defined in article 2 shows the new district and parish wards. It is available at
www.boundarycommittee.org.uk/your-area/newarkandsher.cfm and, at all reasonable times, at the offices of Newark and Sherwood District Council and at the principal office of the Electoral Commission at Trevelyan House, Great Peter Street, London SW1P 2HW.
