EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations revoke the Drivers' Hours (Goods Vehicles) (Milk Collection) (Temporary Exemption) Regulations 2001 ("the principal Regulations") (S.I. 2001/629).
The principal Regulations extended the permissible maximum working day of a driver engaged in the collection and transportation of milk to meet the special needs occasioned by the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain, or the effects or consequences of such outbreak.
The working day of a driver, as set out in section 96(3)(a) of the Transport Act 1968 ("the 1968 Act"), was extended by the principal Regulations from a maximum of eleven to thirteen hours.
The effect of these Regulations is to restore the maximum working day as prescribed by the 1968 Act.
